Stone Pointing

It is important to remove the deteriorating pointing and the dust and debris from the old pointing before re-pointing brick or stonework.

Brick Pointing

When we spot point or completely re-point brick, we aim to leave the pointing slightly recessed from the brick because it looks great.

When there are deteriorated joints and joints that are missing or are about to fall out, this creates openings where water can find its way through the building’s exterior and into the home. Re-pointing prevents water from coming through the brickwork on the outside of your home.

Flagstone Patios

Natural cleft flagstones have irregularities that thermal flagstones do not have. The surface of thermal flagstones is more consistent than natural cleft flagstones. Whereas water puddles on natural cleft flagstones because of the irregularities on the face of the stones, water does not collect on thermal flagstone patios in the same way. Water has an easier time running off the patio and away from the house. If you had a natural cleft patio you would notice that you might have some little puddles of water here and there after it rains, even if the patio has a proper 1% to 2% pitch away from the house.

Proper craftsmanship for a flagstone patio is to break joints as much as possible. The pattern we use for our patios is a random English pattern, meaning that the flagstones are all different sizes.

Steps

We form, pour, and finish concrete steps. We also build flagstone steps with flagstone risers. Regardless of whether your new steps will be concrete or flagstone, the risers should be approximately seven inches high and the tread depth should ideally be twelve inches, though a wider tread can make for a more comfortable step. We build steps to meet any height. We also repair existing steps.

Exterior Chimney Restoration

When the pointing begins to deteriorate on a stone or brick chimney, the time has come to spot point or entirely re-point the chimney, depending on its condition. We set up scaffolding to reach the top of the chimney. We install chimney caps and we can also waterproof the chimney with a water-based dry seal that should be re-applied every three years.

Dan R.

Flagstone Walkway Project, Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia

“Blue Stone Masonry did a fantastic job repointing our 130 year old foundation wall. They were a pleasure to deal with and accomodating to our schedule. I highly recommend them!"
Evan H.

Repointing Project, Mount Airy, Philadelphia, PA

"We were super happy with Blue Stone Masonry's professionalism and the high quality of work. They helped us assess a couple of stucco problems on two different houses we were considering buying and then repaired the crumbiling stucco on the property we wound up purchasing, and stuck to the original estimate - very appreciated by a first-time homeowner."

Julia B.

Stucco Repair Project, University City, Philadelphia, PA

"I've never needed a mason before but was referred to Blue Stone by a home inspection engineer. We had Zach and the crew out to do some stone pointing work and to install a small flagstone patio. Everything was as expected and the final product is nice. Zach and his crew were always on time, accommodating, and very responsive. I also felt the prices were fair based on estimates from some other local companies- and the job did not go over the quoted price. Overall, I would recommend Blue Stone and would use them again if I needed masonry work."

Adam C.

Stone pointing Project, Passyunk Square, Philadelphia, PA

Out of all the companies/people I've worked with in the past on our old house (and there have been a lot) Blue Stone Masonry is by far the best and most pleasant to work with! I really appreciate the reliability, timeliness, and communication. Just superb.
